Leadership
Principal Petrey

Rebecca Petrey, Principal
Dear Southampton Elementary School Students, Families, and Community,
It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I get to introduce myself as the Principal of Southampton Elementary School. I am guided by the belief that teaching and leading are practices, not just roles, and I strive each day to reflect, grow, and improve in service to students, staff, and families.
I had the privilege of serving as the Interim Principal at Southampton during the last school year, and I am excited to continue the work we began together. It is an honor to lead such a vibrant and caring community of students, teachers, and families, and I look forward to building on the momentum we created.
I believe that relationships are at the heart of a thriving school. Through open communication, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to our students, we can build an environment where everyone feels valued and inspired to do their best. When we work together, great things happen.
I hold a Bachelor of Music from Longwood University and a Master’s in Administration and Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University. Since beginning my career in 2003, I’ve served in RPS as a Band Director, General Music Teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal. Outside of school, I enjoy whitewater rafting, canoeing, camping, playing the clarinet, and attending live music events. I’m fortunate to share my life with my husband (a high school art teacher), our daughter, and a wonderfully supportive extended family.
I am honored to continue serving the Southampton Elementary community and excited for all we will accomplish together.
Best,
Rebecca Petrey

Dear Southampton Elementary School Students, Families, and Staff,
It is with great enthusiasm that I introduce myself as the new Assistant Principal of Southampton Elementary School. I am truly honored to join a school community known for its strong sense of pride, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. I officially begin this role on August 4, and I am excited to support our students, staff, and families as we launch an incredible school year together.
Originally born on the beautiful island of Saint Lucia and raised in Petersburg, Virginia, I bring both a global and local perspective to my work in education. I am a proud three-time graduate of Virginia State University, where I earned my Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in education and leadership.
With over 18 years of experience in education, as an English teacher, school counselor, program leader, and advocate for student well-being, I am excited to bring my skills and passion for inclusive learning and leadership to Southampton Elementary. I firmly believe that students are at the heart of every decision, and I am committed to fostering a nurturing and positive learning environment where every child can thrive.
My professional background includes leading Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) initiatives, which I will leverage to promote academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and equitable outcomes for all students. I also value collaboration and shared leadership, and I am excited to work alongside our dedicated staff and engaged families to build strong, supportive partnerships.
As an instructional leader, I believe in empowering teachers and staff through shared decision-making, reflective practice, and professional growth. Together, we will maintain high expectations, celebrate our progress, and create joyful learning experiences for our students.
I look forward to meeting families throughout the school year. I am eager to hear your hopes for your children and to work alongside you in support of their success.
Thank you for welcoming me to the Southampton Elementary School family. I look forward to an incredible year ahead—filled with learning, collaboration, and success!
Warmest regards,
Zana Stanislas-Johnney, Ed.D
